Edwards was the first American naturalist to travel to South America to collect natural history specimens in the Amazon forest. This book inspired Alfred Russel Wallace to travel to the Amazon to collect specimens for museums in Britain (Borba de Moraes, 1983). Wallace later wrote a book about his travels along the Amazon River that was first published in 1853.
