Contemporary dark-green half morocco with five raised bands, spine with gilt-lettering and gilt-decorations, over ornately marbled boards with matching marbled endpapers, all edges with heavy gilt, lg 8vo. In this five volume set there are a total of 273 hand-colored plates that depict 109 birds, 133 shells, 49 butterflies and 2 fishes. The first series of this set is widely regarded as the first English bird book illustrated by lithography. According to Casey Wood (p. 588), the set contains “plates of new, rare, or interesting animals, with one leaf of text to each plate.” See also Fine Bird Books (1990) p. 146 and Nissen, IVB 911.
