Contemporary polished calf with edges gilt-decorated and black morocco spine labels, 8vo. Surveys the mammals of North America with excellent full page plates; also contains nice sections on marine mammals and whaling and on the extinct ground sloth and mastodon. Godman (1794-1830) was a Philadelphia physician and naturalist affiliated with Peale's Museum. His 'American Natural History' was the first study of the mammals of North America that was based principally on personal observations and researches by the author. From the library of Rebecca White - all three volumes are inscribed to her, in 1834, by her father, Josiah White, the legendary pioneer of the Lehigh valley, Pennsylvania. Rebecca White inscribed this set to her cousin, Anna D. White, in 1906. An old albumen photo of John D. Godman is tipped in at the front; also tipped in at front is a 16 page offprint entitled "A sketch of the life and character of Dr. John D. Godman" by the Tract Association of Friends, Philadelphia (no date). Finally, laid in at the rear, is a 24 page offprint entitled "Memoir of Dr. Godman being an introductory lecture, delivered on November 1, 1830" by Thomas Sewall (New York: 1832). An usual association copy with rare ancillary material included.
