Stegocephalia is an old term for early large amphibians, comprising all pre-Jurassic and some later extinct large amphibians with a salamander-like cranial build. The term was coined in 1868 by Edward Drinker Cope. The term “labyrinthodonts” is now applied to this group as a grade term.
