Description

Pp. (iv), 50 fine hand-colored copper-engraved plates each with one or more descriptive leaves of text, (2, index). Contemporary patterned red morocco, gilt-ruled around the edges, blue marbled endpapers, 4to. As in most of Donovan’s works, the colors are brilliantly applied and are often heightened with silver, gold and/or gum Arabic – the colors are laid done so thickly that often one cannot see the copper-engraving underneath. It is interesting to note that Donovan never traveled to China but obtained the insect specimens and information about each form from Sir George Staunton who traveled extensively in China building natural history collections.

Very Good

Some edge wear to the morocco binding with a little darkening around the outer edges, occasional light age-toning to some text leaves, the hand-colored plates are bright and clean; a very good copy.
