Contemporary patterned red morocco, gilt-ruled around the edges, blue marbled endpapers, 4to. As in most of Donovan’s works, the colors are brilliantly applied and are often heightened with silver, gold and/or gum Arabic – the colors are laid done so thickly that often one cannot see the copper-engraving underneath. It is interesting to note that Donovan never traveled to China but obtained the insect specimens and information about each form from Sir George Staunton who traveled extensively in China building natural history collections.
