Description

Pp. (i), 2, (68), 57 fine hand-colored copper-engraved plates, (2, index). Contemporary brown calf, covers with gilt border decorations, black morocco spine label that is gilt-lettered, 4to. As in most of Donovan’s works, the colors are brilliantly applied and are often heightened with silver, gold and/or gum Arabic – the colors are laid done so thickly that often one cannot see the copper-engraving underneath. It is interesting to note that Donovan never traveled to India but obtained the insect specimens illustrated and discussed in this work from various English subjects who had spent numerous years in India. Old signature of Fe. Bouds on the front endpaper, likely the first owner of the book.

Very Good

Some edge wear to the calf binding, gilt rules on spine a little indistinct in places, slight discolorations to the margins of the front and rear endpapers, light age-toning to a few plates, otherwise the text and fine hand-colored plates are bright and clean; a very good copy.
