Description

Pp. 503, 61 fine hand-colored plates engraved by Sansom after Sydenham Edwards (1768-1819). Contemporary straight-grained light brown morocco, covers with elaborate outer border tooled in gilt and blind-stamped, spine in five compartments with wide semi-raised bands, lettered in the second compartment, the others with overall repeated decorations in gilt and blind-stamping, gilt turn-ins, all pages edges in gilt, 4to. The two volumes here are bound in one large volume as is often the case with this treatise. This is the best published collection of Edward’s work who was one of the greatest English botanical artists of the period. The plates from the “The New Flora Britannica” were first published by R. W. Dickson under the pseudonym Alexander McDonald in “A Complete Dictionary of Practical Gardening” (1807). However, the presentation of these plates in “The New Flora Britannica” is far superior due to the much more brilliant coloration and the fact that a higher quality paper stock was used to print the plates. See also Dunthorne 107 and Nissen BBI, 479.

Very Good

Light off-setting of the frontis plate onto the title page of volume 1 only, title page of volume 2 mis-bound between plate 53 and page 451, the superb hand-colored plates and the text is bright, clean and free from foxing or browning, armorial bookplate on the front endpaper, morocco on spine with a few old wrinkles, a few old mars to the boards; easily a very good copy in an attractive period binding.
