Description
Pp. 357, [3, blank], 8 (publisher's ads dated September, 1855), lithographed map of Walden Pond tipped in facing p.307 (as called for). Publisher's brown cloth boards, stamped in blind and gilt, with all original yellow endpapers, sm 8vo. Only 2000 copies of this first edition were printed. According to Allen (A Bibliography of Henry David Thoreau), Walden was first published on August 9, 1854. As copies were sold, different-dated ad sections were placed at the rear of the text prior to binding. According to Allen (pg. 9), the first reprinting of the book did not occure until 1864. Since the ads in this copy are dated September 1855, this volume was probably sold in the fall of 1855.

Slight wear to corners and to cloth at the head and foot of the spine, cloth is clean with no fading or sunning, small one-half inch split to cloth along the top outer joint has been expertly repaired, text block is bright, clean and free from foxing or browning, a very good copy in the original cloth binding.
