Publisher’s original black cloth, lettered in white on the spine and front cover, with drawing of orange bird on the front cover (volume 1); publisher’s original white cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine and front cover, front cover also has elaborate gilt drawing of perching bird, color pictorial dust jacket, (volume 2); publisher’s original white cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine and front cover, (volumes 4 and 5), all four volumes have the top page edges in gilt, folio (14 x 11 inches).  Volume 1 and 2 depict and describe the diverse avifauna of Brazil and its islands, volumes 4 and 5 depict and describe the hummingbirds of Brazil.  Volume 3 in this series was never published due to the author's death.  This set is complete.  All four volumes provide complete surveys of the annual cycles, migration, distribution, classification, external characters and analytical keys for identification.  Text is bilingual in Portuguese and English with Latin nomenclature.  Volume 4 has a small inscription on the front endpaper, Volumes 1, 2 and 5 have no ownership marks.
