Pp. (xii), 61 full page chromolithograph plates illustrating over 700 birds all with the original tissue guards.  Publisher’s original ornately blind-stamped cherry-red cloth with floral designs in relief on the front and rear covers, spine with five raised bands decorated with panel lines and gilt floral designs, title and author lettered in gilt in one compartment, all page edges in gilt with patterned satin endpapers, large folio (16.5 x 13 inches; 42 x 33 cm).  This work was first published in German in 16 parts issued in the years 1852 to 1871 under the title Naturgeschichte der Vogel by Europa by Anton Fritsch.  This is the first and only Czech edition of the Atlas volume.  This volume of plates opens with a systematically arranged list of the birds figured in which the names are given in Latin, German, English and French.  Some of the individual bird images have their common names in Czech in pencil next to the image.  Detailed inscription, possibly from the author, on the first blank endpaper.  This work is rare; a single copy is listed in the National Library of the Czech Republic.  See also Casey Wood, p. 349-350 and Anker no. 152.
