The Formation of Vegetable Mould through the Action of Worms, with Observations on their Habits
By Darwin, Charles
Pp. viii, 328, (1), 32 (ads from John Murray dated 1889); 15 text-figures. Publisher’s original forest-green cloth with spine lettered in gilt and with ornate gilt decorations at the top and bottom of the spine, the front and rear cloth-covered boards have blind-stamped border decorations, clay-coated dark brown endpapers, 8vo. This is Freeman 1373, the eleventh thousandth (corrected) of the first edition. The first edition of this work in 1881 “was published only six months before Darwin’s death but covers a subject that he had studied for more than fifty years. He showed the services performed by earthworms in eating leaves and grinding earth in their gizzards and turning it into fertile soil…” (DBS). No ownership names but a previous unidentified owner had written the date “January 1890” in the top outer corner of the title page. This is likely the date when the first owner acquired the book from the publisher.
