Volumes 1 and 2 are finely bound in full morocco leather, spine with five raised bands lettered in gilt in two compartments and with elaborate gilt decorations in the other four compartments, front and rear covers with complex border designs in gilt, both covers with beveled edges, French marbled endpapers bordered on the inside front covers with gilt floral designs, all page edges in gilt; volume 3 is bound in full red cloth, spine with a blue cloth label lettered in gilt and set off by gilt panel lines, 4to. "This work contains a description of the birds of North America north of Mexico, including Greenland and Alaska. The main stress is laid on an account of the life history of the species, to which is added information about the geographical distribution of the birds and a brief description of the eggs and the individual species. Baird and Ridgway supplied the descriptive parts of the work, while Dr. Brewer dealt with the habits of the birds" (Anker, no. 22). Volumes 1 and 2 are from the private library of Simeon J. Drake with his name stamped in gold at the bottom of the volume’s front cover, volume 3 is from the private library of M. R. Hyatt, M. D. with his name stamped in gold at the bottom of the volume’s front cover, there is also a small unintelligible blind stamp of a former owner on the title page. No other ownership marks and few signs of use.

|Condition Description||Mild water marks to the outer margins of some text pages of volumes 1 and 2 that never touch the text, small marginal water mark to the bottom outer corner of the first 45 pages of volume 3 again not touching the text, the fine hand-colored plates in all three volumes are bright and clean with no water marks or any foxing or browning; overall an attractively bound copy in near fine condition.|
