Publisher’s original decorated terra-cotta cloth, stamped in black and in gilt on the spine and front cover, and with silhouettes in black of nine mammals, original clear acetate cover, lg folio (15 1/4 x 12 1/4 inches). This is the first edition of this classic work with Scribner's “A” printed on the copyright page. The fine silhouette illustrations by Ugo Mochi were each cut from a single piece of paper; each image show incredible anatomical detail sometimes including the natural background such as mountains or trees. The text is by naturalist T. Donald Carter; he describes the external anatomy, the life histories and the ranges and other information about each species. No ownership marks.
