North American Species of Hygrophorus
By Hesler, L.R. and Smith, A.H.
Pp. xiv, 416, 126 black-and-white photo-plates. Full gray-brown cloth lettered in silver on the spine and front cover, color pictorial photo of Hygrophorus coccineus inset on the front cover, lg 8vo. This work examines the conspicuous and colorful known as Hygrophori in the only book-length treatment of this large genus containing 244 species, varieties and forms – of which 41 are new to science. This genus was originally monographed by Fries in 1838. In the present monograph, Hesler and Smith agree it is more realistic to arrange the species of Hygrophorus into a natural classification of species rather than to split the genus into numerous genera as supported by other researchers. This volume is from the private research collection of University of Michigan mycologist Alexander H. Smith with his signature on the front endpaper. On the title page it is inscribed to “Mr. Paul Marshall Ohea, compliments of Alexander H. Smith, Jan. 24, 1963.” Later this inscription is crossed out in pencil likely in the hand of Alexander Smith.
