Publisher’s original one-half red morocco leather with 6 raised bands, lettered in gilt in 3 compartments and with gilt-ruled decorations in all compartments, over cream-colored coarse -weave cloth, top page edge in gilt, in matching cloth-covered slipcase with red morocco highlights at the head and foot of the slipcase opening, folio (14.25 x 10.25 inches). This is the Collector's Edition limited to 400 copies signed by author (S. Dillon Ripley) and by the artist (J. Fenwick Lansdowne) -- this is copy #297. Roger Tory Peterson states that ‘Rails of the World’ …is in the tradition of the great 19th century illustrated bird books that were made possible through princely patronage. Because of the burgeoning interest in birds in these affluent times we may again enjoy monographs on such a grand scale such as this” (from the rear cover of the prospectus). The original folio eight-page prospectus which includes two color illustrations is also included in the slipcase – this prospectus states the retail price of this limited edition was $400. No ownership marks and no signs of use.
