Pp. v, (1), 374, [14, ads], 7 heliotype plates (3 folding), 21 wood engraved illustrations (6 full page).  Publisher's original brick red cloth, front and rear covers have black wheels with spokes seen in Appleton first editions, spine is lettered in gilt, sm 8vo.  Freeman 1143.  This work was published in December 1872, the same year as the London edition, even though the title page is dated 1873.  Early signature of John A. Wheelock on the title page.  Later from the research collection of herpetologist Lauren E. Brown with his signature on the front endpaper dated Dec. 11, 2009.  Front blank endpaper annotated in pencil by George Beatty with bibliographic notes about the volume.
