This is the first complete guide to the ferns, fern related, and seed-bearing plants of Washington, northern Oregon, the western part of Montana and southern British Columbia. This set was published in reversed chronology: Volume 1 (1969) deals with cryptogams, gymnosperms, and monocotyledons, volume 2 (1964) with Salicaceae to Saifragaceae, volume 3 (1961) with Saxifragacae to Ericaceae, volume 4 (1959) Ericaceae through Campanulaceae, and volume 5 (1955) with Compositae. This five-volume set is from the private research collection of University of Michigan mycologist Alexander H. Smith. Three of the volumes have attractive bookplates signed “Helen and Alex Smith.” Other volumes bear Christmas inscriptions to “Helen and Alex from Al and Elizabeth” on the front endpapers. No other ownership marks.
