Publisher’s original elaborately blind-stamped and gilt-decorated wine-red cloth with large gilt scene of birds and title on the front covers, sm 4to (7 x 10 1/2 inches). Zimmer (p. 87) states: “Principally an account of the habits of non-British European birds, with brief descriptions and synonymy, forming a sort of sequel to Morris's 'History of British Birds,' 1870”. Casey Wood (p. 254) observes “This admirable descriptive treatise … furnishes the synonymy, generic characters, distribution, and habits of those birds of Europe seen outside the British Isles.” The hand-colored plates are by Fawcett with many illustrations of eggs. No ownership marks.
