Pp. xi, 504; 166 full page plates (numerous folding maps – some quite large, some black-and-white photos, some halftone drawings of fishes, some line-drawings).  Publisher’s original dark brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt, front and rear covers with blind-stamped border lines, 4to.  This is Bulletin of the United States Fish Commission, volume IX, for 1889.  There are 22 separate papers by such notable researchers as Charles Gilbert, David Starr Jordan, Seth Meek, Hugh Smith, Charles Townsend, and Henry Wilson.  Three titles include "Explorations in Colorado and Utah"; "Reconnaissance of the streams and lakes of the Yellowstone National Park"; and "Salmon and Salmon Rivers of Alaska."  Like these titles, many papers are reports on fish species (Alaska salmon, Sturgeon, etc.) or reports on geographical studies of fishes in various states (such as Colorado, Utah, Tennessee and Alabama).  There also are some papers concerning fisheries in the USA and a few papers on oysters, crabs and the Giant Scallop.  This volume is sent with the compliments of the U.S. Commissioner of Fish, Marshall McDonald, with a note signed by McDonald bound in at the title page.  There is also the name stamp of Oliver D. Schock of Hamburg, PA on the front blank endpaper.

Condition Description There is some browning to the endpapers, a nick to the cloth on the spine and a few spots on the rear cover, the gilt on the spine is dull making the title difficult to read; overall a tight copy in very good condition.
