The work documents the fishes collected on Novara-Expedition that circumnavigated the globe in 1857-1859; about 900 specimens of fish were collected on this expedition that visited South America, Africa, Ceylon, Java, China, Australia, and New Zealand. This massive scientific expedition was sponsored by the Naturhistorisches Museum in Vienna; Austrian vice admiral Bernhard von Wüllerstorf-Urbair served as captain of the frigate SMS Novara during the world voyage.
