This is the author's most significant herpetological work. "Steindachner is best known as an ichthyologist, but he published nearly 60 herpetological titles (1862-1917) including one major work, the amphibian and reptile section of the circumnavigation by the Austrian frigate Novara. This monograph reviewed a collection of nearly 1000 specimens from along the ship's route in South America, Africa, Ceylon, Java, China, Australia and New Zealand" (Adler, 1989, volume 1).
