By Wied, Maximilian Prinz zu
SKU# 15556
Pp. viii, 141, (3); 7 hand-colored lithographed plates (4 are large folding). One-quarter red morocco leather, spine with five raised bands lettered in gilt in 2 compartments and with gilt panel lines, over French marbled boards, lg 4to (12.25 x 9.74 inches; 310 x 250mm). This edition is limited to 100 signed and numbered copied, this being no. 30. The limitation page is signed by the publisher, Breck Bartholomew, and by the illustrator, Lisa Carroll, who hand-colored the plates. The work provides a catalogue of reptiles seen on a journey through North America. It presents some of the earliest accounts of North American reptiles especially of turtles (shown in 5 hand-colored plates) and salamanders (shown in 2 hand-colored plates - one is the hellbender salamander, endemic to eastern North America). According to Kraig Adler (Herpetological Review vol. 36, no. 3, pp. 349-350) this reprint surpasses all other herpetological reprints made by the SSAR or by any European publisher. It meets the highest criteria and is of a quality of materials and appearance that Prince Maxmilian’s classic work deserved to have had in 1865! It is quite extraordinary that is limited edition reprint can be judged of higher quality than the original publication. No ownership marks and no signs of use.
